St Gerard Majella School is a co-educational Catholic primary school located in the southern suburb of Woree, Cairns. With a healthy enrolment of around 400 students from Prep to Year Six, the school has always been a highly regarded and well-sought-after Catholic primary school.
This role is an opportunity for an Indigenous Liaison Officer (ILO) to liaise between the St Gerard Majella students, staff and families. The Indigenous Liaison Officer develops, promotes, and maintains communication networks between First Nations and Torres Strait Islanders students, parents/guardians, the community and the school. The ILO plays a key role in providing knowledge and understanding of First Nations and Torres Strait Islander histories, languages, and cultures within the school, promoting respect and harmony. The ILO will support First Nations and Torres Strait Islander students with learning and engagement to support improved learning outcomes. The role is conducted in collaboration with school staff and the school Principal.
Catholic Education, Diocese of Cairns, considers that being First Nations or a Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement for this position under sub-2 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991. Therefore, it is a requirement that applicants/appointees must be of First Nations or Torres Strait Islander descent and that they identify as a First Nations and/or Torres Strait Islander person.
