The College is situated in the central business district of Cairns, one block from the Cairns Esplanade. St Monica's is the oldest school in the region, with rich heritage and Mercy traditions. As a Catholic Secondary Day and Boarding College for young women, St Monica's is a faith community where belief in the dignity of the human person underlies our educational philosophy, structures and processes. During the last few years, the College has undertaken a significant building project to complement its two heritage buildings. Reinforcing our strong Mercy tradition all of the buildings are named after Sisters of Mercy. We are the only all-female school in the Cairns region with an enrolment of over 690 students. Year levels 7 to 12 are offered, with both day and boarding options.
The role and responsibilities of the School Officer - First Nations Education (SOFNE) is primarily one of communication and liaison between Diocesan Schools, Catholic Education Services and local Indigenous people, communities and agencies to increase student engagement and outcomes for Indigenous students. Integral to this is communication with parents and carers. The position has a strong cultural focus that extends to advice and action on broad issues, including the enrichment of cultural awareness within the school.
SOFNEs develop, promote and maintain communication networks between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, the parents or guardians, the community and the school. This communication includes liaising between the Boarding House Supervisors, students and their parents and carers. SOFNEs play a key role in providing knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, languages and cultures within schools. This understanding promotes respect and harmony. They conduct their role in collaboration with school staff and the school Principal.
